Sting 18G Caitlin Breen named Daily Journal Overall Female Athlete of Year 2009

Breen_large_medium

By Emanuel Lee, Daily Journal Staff
It wasn't the no-hitters she threw, the times she ran or goals she scored that defined Caitlin Breen's year.
Breen, the overall Daily Journal Female Athlete of the Year, had enough moments on the field to make multiple highlight films.

Sting 18 Gold announce verbal signings

Felicia Baldwin (2010) announced she has verballed to attend UC Davis.  Selecting UC Davis fullfills her college dream, since realizing this is where she wanted to be after attending a softball camp held at the Aggie Softball complex. The Sting organization is very proud of her hard work in the classroom and out on the field.

Jillian Andersen (2010) announced she has verballed to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  Jillian had a tough decision between Poly and UC Davis, but felt Cal Poly was a better fit for her. Jillian will be the first Sting player to attend Sting President-Bob Perales alma mater.

Felicia and Jillian will fit nicely in these softball programs as they both present the opportunities for them to play as freshman. Both young woman have done their job in the classroom and showcased themselves very well on the field.

They both truly exemplify why the Sting organization exists. The Sting congratulates Felicia and Jillian!

The Sting would like to congratulate Sara Rice on her commitment to attend Iowa State. Sara also had interest from both Boston University and Purdue to join their squads; but as soon as she stepped foot on the Cyclone's campus, she knew it was where she wanted to go. Sara said that she loved the coaching staff and team, knew that playing in the Big 12 would give her great competition and liked the college town feel of Ames. She plans on studying Broadcast Journalism. The Sting is proud of Sara and her parents Jeff and Vicki and we wish Sara the best!

Surprising Results on Latest Sting Power Poll- FANS SAY "NO GO" TO NPF PRO SOFTBALL

The latest Power Poll results showed an interesting response that had our audience (222 pollsters) shying away from  supporting a new NPF franchise here in the Bay Area.  60% of our poll takers were profoundly confident that the Bay Area could NOT support NPF softball.  Only 37% felt the market was ready for NPF, with 10% of the 37% feeling it would be successful only if expansion took place in the South Bay or Pennisula. The results clearly showed that you were either for bringing in an NPF team or set against it, as there were "no unsure-need more information" ballots cast.

Perhaps an indication that the economy isn't quite ready to support the League? Or perhaps fans feeling the market is oversaturated with sports franchises.

18G Jamie Wallis selects Santa Clara University!

Jamie Wallis had a tough decision to make - UOP or Santa Clara University. Both teams expressed serious interest in having Jamie join their roster and in the end she decided on the team and school that best fit her academic and athletic needs. The Sting organization congratulates Jamie!

5th Annual Steak Feed a rousing success!

by Mary Hoffman

The 5th Annual San Jose Sting Steak Feed took place Saturday, May 9th, and was a great success!

The food, as always, was delicious, featuring that famous Santa Maria Tri-tip, prepared by the Perales family. Along with caesar salad, garlic bread, and baked beans, there was an abundance of food and fun! The dessert table overflowed with tantalizing desserts. As a special treat commerating the 10th anniversary of the Sting, Rhonda Newman and Ginger Ramirez created hand made chocolates, purple-colored no less, for all to enjoy!

In addition to the always wonderful food, there were 3 gift baskets which inspired competitive and spirited bidding to get that winning bid in at the last minute! There was also a live auction of an ipod and primo SF Giant's tickets!

The DJ helped keep the joint jumping with a great mix of songs appealing to everyone's taste - young and old!

In addition to the Perales family, this event would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of some very key people to the Sting family:

Rhonda and Brian Newman - this dynamic duo volunteer more hours than there are in a day to the Sting organization!

Ginger and Chris Ramirez - this wonderful couple gets the job done and makes sure we all benefit!

A BIG thank you to these 4 incredibly talented and generous people for giving of their time and energy to the Sting!

And, many thanks to both Jackie Morris and Ed Menjivar, 16U Team reps, for taking the first shift and owning it!

Professional Women's Softball team in the Bay Area Poll

A current on-line poll is trying to send a message to the National Pro Fastpitch league to start a franchise here in the Bay Area of California.  Their league is small, and they are really trying to help it grow. Being the Bay Area has a huge softball community, they believe it's the perfect place to host a professional women's team!
In light of this, they have started an on-line petition to voice your opinion at:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/bayareaprosoftball/index.html ).

Make your opinion be heard. Also, we'd like to hear your opinion as well in our current Sting "Power Poll."

Sting Power Poll appears be to a reflection of economic times-Stockton is most preferred

Our latest Sting Power Poll generated a huge response from over 290 pollsters with an overwhelming preference that softball tournaments be played in Stockton, California as opposed to some of the more "glamorous" destinations including Las Vegas or Colorado.  Whether this is a reflection of the current economic times remains to be determined, but one might draw this conclusion. Huntington Beach followed with 17% of the preferred location for tournaments followed by Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale at 14%.  The Colorado tournament did not fare well with only 7% of the preferred votes.
