Amador Valley High School (Pleasanton) Senior Haley Douglas, who is bound for University of Central Florida, was named EBAL's League MVP for the 2010 season.
The Sting Congratulates Haley!
Lauren Maslak (18G-Gron) and Mikaela Ebner (16U-Esquibel) made a perfect pitcher/catcher duo this season
In first round CCS action this week, the 10th seeded Santa Clara Bruins went to work and scored 10 runs to eliminate 7th seeded Carlmont from the playoffs. Santa Clara quickly established itself by grabbing a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Pitcher Mikaela Ebner (16U-Esquibel) (3-for-3) led off with a double off Aurora Stottler (14-11-1) and took third on a passed ball, and then Niki Erkson drove her in with a bloop single to left field. Carlmont tired to manufacture a run on a wild pitch, but catcher Lauren Maslak (18G-Gron) threw to Ebner at the plate for the putout. Then Ebner (19-7) struck out the next batter to end the inning. Carlmont, which totaled three hits, never got another runner in scoring position against Ebner, who registered three strikeouts and walked one. Maslak pushed the lead to 3-0 with a soft, two-run single to shallow right on a 3-2 pitch and the Bruins never looked back, adding 7 more runs in the 10-0, 5 inning victory.
Two weeks ago, Aragon High School was in 4th place in the Bay division of the Peninsula Athletic League, just hoping they might find a way into CCS. That was before Maureen (Mo-Dud) Duddy (18G-Gron) took charge of the plate and led Aragon to five straight wins, third place in Bay and an automatic bid to CCS.
In five league games over the last two weeks, Maureen is 16 for 20 at the plate for an .800 average, including three triples and three doubles, scoring 11 runs; and going 5 for 5 vs. perennial league champions Carlmont with whom Aragon was tied for third place at the beginning of the game. Along the way, Maureen also had seven stolen bases (including a steal of home!), two walks and no strikeouts. Aragon outscored their opponents 39-8 in these games. Maureen was also recently named as MVP of the Mission City/Wilcox Invitational Tournament; Aragon placed 2nd in the tournament.
Gilroy put the hurt on Alisal, pounding out 18 hits in a lopsided victory. Casey Lester (18G-Gron) picked up the win inside the circle and had three hits for the Mustangs.
Lester recorded her second win in three days, pitching a complete-game four-hitter. The sophomore tossed nine strikeouts, the only runs coming in the first inning.
Mustangs finish off Stevenson in 10 innings, 5-3
PEBBLE BEACH - Two runs in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Gilroy High softball team to a 5-3 extra-inning victory over R.L. Stevenson in non-league action on Wednesday in Pebble Beach.
Casey Lester (18G-Gron) pounded out four hits and Stephanie Rodriguez collected three base knocks for Gilroy, who posted 12 hits as a team.

| Fonseca on fire at plate |
| March 30, 2010, 03:18 AM By Nathan Mollat Daily Journal Staff |
When Dani Fonseca (18G-Gron) was named to the Hillsdale varsity softball team as a freshman last season, she wanted to do everything in her power to prove she belonged there.
She had what she called a season-long slump.
“I had the most strikeouts on the team,” Fonseca said.
Now a sophomore, Fonseca is living up to the billing she got last year. A lot more comfortable and confident this season, plus a year of intense work under her belt is paying dividends as the third baseman is providing the offense ....
In four games last week in which the Knights went 4-0, Fonseca was 8 for 13 with three doubles, a triple and four runs batted in — including the game-winning hit and RBI in the Knights’ nine-inning, 1-0 win over Capuchino Thursday.
For her efforts, Fonseca is this week’s Daily Journal Athlete of the Week.

The Sting would like to congratulate Sara Rice on her commitment to attend Iowa State. Sara also had interest from both Boston University and Purdue to join their squads; but as soon as she stepped foot on the Cyclone's campus, she knew it was where she wanted to go. Sara said that she loved the coaching staff and team, knew that playing in the Big 12 would give her great competition and liked the college town feel of Ames. She plans on studying Broadcast Journalism.
Rice will bolster the middle infield for the Cyclones as a second baseman with great softball experience. She prepped at Burlingame High School, where she hit .410 with 19 runs batted in as a junior. Rice plays ASA ball for the San Jose Sting 18 Gold.
“Sara (Rice) is a tremendous defensive second baseman who knows the game really well,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She’s come from a really strong softball background. She hits for power and average so she’ll definitely be a welcome addition to our team.”
The Sting is proud of Sara and her parents Jeff and Vicki and we wish Sara the best!
After much thought, Megan Volpano was excited to accept the offer from the Boston University Terriers to play for their softball program. BU had exactly what Megan was looking for, balancing softball and academics very nicely. For Megan, school mattered just as much as softball. In addition to the academics, Megan really loved the coaching staff. She really felt a connection during her unofficial visit. And, to top it off, the city is amazing - Boston is a great city with lots to offer, and being right in the city makes it that much more exciting. Other schools who were considering Megan include Harvard, St. Mary's College of CA, and University of Pennsylvania.
“Megan will have a chance to be a four-year starter at third base,” stated Rychcik. “She is a very solid defender and a good middle of the order hitter. We needed to recruit someone at third base that can take away bunts and start double plays for us. We are excited to see her solidify our third base position.”
Congratulations Megan on finding the right balance of academics and athletics for you!
